Once the apple of its owners eye
it sits there quietly, rusting away.
The spotted chrome, no longer gleams
the rear view mirrors robbed
to fit another car in need.

Headlights have gone so too
has the small steering wheel
which was the owners pride.
The souped-up engine has lost
the head, and special carb.

When they were first fitted on
at great expense, he?d paid
the cost off over many a month;
?twas almost like a Cooper S
in speed and rorty noise.

Then came the night of pain
the mental anguish, joy riders
stole the precious car and wrecked it
on a careless night of thievish ?fun?
turning it upside down when cornering fast.

?Its written off? the insurance agent said.
?The roof is dented in, the body shell
no longer safe?. Now it sits and gently
decomposes; as they buy the precious parts
from the corner of a breakers yard.

So what was once, its owners pride and joy;
has met the fate that all things do.
No longer washed down on a Sunday morn
or lovingly polished up, with ?Turtle Wax?.
It has now become a heap of dying junk.

I really like this ... it's hard to explain exactly why, but I like that it really conveys a feeling to go along with each part of it. The temporal change in the middle (and then the change back) adds a lot, and doesn't throw anything off, as is usually pretty easy to do.

I agree with Phil, this poem is really good at inspiring mental imagery to go along with each verse.

Yes.
A bit like marriage.
Just follow along and consider the 'stealing' to be the future spouse.
The rest falls in line quite well.
I trust all will find something relative in the bowels of the poem.
